Human Trafficking

The definition of human trafficking  (according to Wikipedia)

Human trafficking is the trade in humans, most commonly for the purpose of sexual slaveryforced labor or for the extraction of organs or tissues, including surrogacy and ova removal. Trafficking is a lucrative industry, representing an estimated $32 billion per year in international trade, compared to the estimated annual $650 billion for all illegal international trade circa 2010.

According to the Office of Justice Programs,

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, repressing thousands of people within the United States and millions throughout the world every year. According to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000, human trafficking includes the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or other services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion, for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery. It includes sex trafficking, in which a commercial sex act is induced by force, fraud, or coercion, or in which the victim is under 18 years of age.”

Women are the most likely victims of human trafficking and for the reason of “sex slave” (Click for the UN Study)

According to the United Nations, the map below shows the countries where the Trafficking originates and the countries that are the destination for trafficking. Naturally, the US is the place where most slaves end up (hmm… not Thailand?)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Office_to_Monitor_and_Combat_Trafficking_in_Persons
